NEnA - what is behind all this?

Nano4women – women4entrepreneurship... in Autum 2005 the network nano4women (www.nano4women.com) has been initiated in the course of an international conference of BMBF, which intended to promote the carreers of young female scientists in the future market of nanotechnologies. Especially spin-offs from universities, with team-work as additional aspect, is an increasing important professional option and carreer chance in this young science and cross-section technology. The increasing number of female students and graduates in natural sciences support the high innovative potential of female entrepreneurs in this field.

In the course of the BMBF action programme "Power for Entrepreneurs" an innovative and target group and gender specific consulting and qualification programme in the form of one-week „Nano-Entrepreneurship-Academies (NEnA)“ has been initiated, all patronized by the Martin-Luther-University Halle (Saale) in cooperation with the Zentrum für Weiterbildung gGmbH (center for advanced education), science2public – Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftskommunikation (organization for communication of science) and a strong national-wide and regionally active network, which offers young female scientists in nanotechnologies and related scientific and information technological study courses a tangible and efficient introduction in theory and practice of entrepreneurship.

The „Nano-Entrepreneurship-Academy (NEnA)“ will take place in turns at the Universities of Paderborn, Halle and Marburg. The first academy is planned for the winter semester vacation 2007 (September 2007) at the University of Paderborn. In the following year the second NEnA will take place in March 2008 at Halle, and in 2009, also in Mach, the third academie is planned in the Competence-Center Business, at Frankfurt/Main, in cooperation with the Univesity of Marburg.

The project will be supported by a strong regional and national network from the field of politics, science and economy, such as the nation-wide grünerinnenagentur (bga) (agency for female entrepreneurs), the initiative for start-ups science4life, Degussa AG, the venture group of Fraunhofer, the action line nanotech of the Hessian Department of Trade and Industry, etc.

NEnA – Success factor: Teamwork entrepreneurship

The concept „Nano4women and Entrepreneurship“ for young female scientists is based on a modular, process-oriented training and qualification programm, with a concept close to economy and focusses on interdisciplinary teamwork entrepreneurship: As especially nanotechnology as THE interdisciplinary science, which already realizes tangible research projects in interdiciplinary project teams, needs such objectives.

Within the future science Nano, in view of the technology oriented start-ups of companies, there is a very expandable potential in order to profit from a successful entrepreneurship.

Germany is currently a very good starting basis for the economic realization of activities in nanotechnologies. However the excellence in research does not reflect the whole range of economic feasibility.

In this field there is a high potential for spin-offs from the field of research. Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary and innovative science and is characterized by an increasing tendency of spin-offs and start-ups from universities. The proof: More than 40 companies have been founded since the introduction of competence centers in nanotechnology, which were initiated to support start-ups. Academic spin-offs are important channels for quick transfer of research results from science to business. Those spin-offs operate at the technological front line and profit mostly from a direct R&D support by the universities.

NEnA – Supply and demand...

Following a national-wide invitation for participation of the 32 applications per NEnA from the field of action of nanotechnology a detailed check and selection of the applications received by the jury and following a detailed analysis of competences (profiling) the interdisciplinary entrepreneurship teams will be composed (matching). These teams will develop the necessary skills to start up a company (in teamwork) in a one-week intensive training (=NEnA). The develop jointly a business idea and present it to the jury. Within the coaching subsequently to each NEnA the female entrepreneurs will have the possibility to advance the development of realizing their idea. The objective is to initiate and accompany tangible spin-offs of young nano-scientists within the project network. An additional incentive is the exchange of the two best graduates of each NEnA in cooperation with Margaret Hines, Evident Technologies, USA, and mentor of the nano4women network, which intends to acquire further skills in international transfer.
