Nano&Art – The competition
For visualisations of the range of activity
of nanotechnologies – for women only!
What is behind all this?
The progress and development of microscopic characterisations of nano materials
provide entirely new insights into their structure and properties. These methods are
the basics of all discoveries as they allow us to see behind the curtain of the nano
cosmos, which is not visible to the naked eye. In addition to the scientific relevance
of these images they are at the same time aesthetical pieces of art. The competition
aims at presenting young successful female scientists to the public as well as
facilitate them the step towards nanotechnology, which is one of the youngest and
most future-orientated sciences. The prize has initially been awarded in the course
of the BMBF initiative nano4women, which intends to increase the share young
female scientists in nanotechnologies and is now continued by Degussa, the initiative
“nanotech” of the Hessian Department of Trade and Industry and the Fraunhofer
Institute for Mechanics of Materials at Halle/Saale, Germany.
Initiators
Ilka Bickmann, Managing Director of women.de GmbH, and Professor Ralf
Wehrspohn, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials
Halle/Saale, Germany.
The jury
Well-known representatives of science, art, economy and media
Alexandra Schwarz, Degussa AG
Prof. Ralf Wehrspohn, Fraunhofer Institute, Halle/Saale
Julia Schlingmann, vdi nachrichten
Dr. Norbert Lossau, die Welt
Verena French, Kunst-Akademie München and FSG3
Helmut Hund, Mandatory for nanotechnologies of the Federal State of Hesse
Criteria for the award are artistic quality, independent visual language, originality and
creativity in the media specific realisation as well as the transformation of the subject.

REWVIEW 2005: Science Price of the special kind... Invitation to the "Nano&Art" competition, sponsored by Degussa AG
On 2nd February the official award of the "Nano&Art" prize took place at the Science2Business-Center of Degussa at Marl... and the winner is...?
Cornelia Schurr, 28, from the Max-Planck-Insitute at Stuttgart
with her image "Nano-Schmuck" (nano jewelery)!

Congratulations!

The prize has been awarded in the course of the initiative nano4women, which aims at increasing the share of female scientists in Nanotechnologies. Eligible were students, doctorates, post docs and junior scientists (up to dissertation) at universities, research institutes and other schools in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other European countries. Each participant had the possibility to submit up to two pieces of work.
The following alternative subjects were proposed:
Subject 1: „Relations“
Subject 2: „Body“
Prizes were awarded for the 20 most impressive microscope images received at the University of Paderborn, for the attention of Prof. Dr. Ralf Wehrspohn, before 31.12.2005.
The first prize, 1,000 Euro, was sponsored by Degussa AG and awarded to Cornelia Schurr by Dr. Meissner, Degussa AG, during the award reception on 2nd February at the S2B-Center of Degussa AG at Marl. Alongside on the photograph: Professor Ralf Wehrspohn, initiator and general coordinator of the initiative "nano4women" and consequently also member of the jury.
Criteria for the award of the prices were artistic quality, independent visual language, the originality and creativity in the media specific realisation as well as the transformation of the subject. The description of the artwork of the winner and the comment about it: "scanning electron microscope image of carbon nanotubes, showing small impurities of carbon (colored blue)" The image has been taken during her dissertation supervised by Dr. Julie Nucci in the field of fiber-reinforced composite materials.
Artist and member of the jury Verena French, Munich, annotated: "Splendidly ordered whoopee of mites, you can imagine the kind of party going on in your pillows at night..."
Jury \\
The jury was composed of :
- Alexandra Schwarz, Degussa-AG
- Prof. Ralf Wehrspohn, University of Paderborn
- Rainer Esser, Spokesman of the Management, Die ZEIT
- Julia Schlingmann, editor vdi-nachrichten
- Verena French, Kunst-Akademie Munich and FSG3
The jury made a preselection of 20 pieces of work, which had been submitted to the University of Paderborn, for the attention of Prof. Wehrspohn, before 31.12.2005. Subsequently the first prize was chosen by majority vote. Legal proceedings were excluded.
Here you will find impressions of all 20 nominees as well as a gallery of all submitted images, not an easy choice for the jury...
